The Contractors State License Board (CSLB) publishes Spanish versions of ten exams commonly taken by candidates, and the Law and Business exam is one of them. In 2025, 6,853 candidates took it in Spanish, more than any other Spanish paper CSLB offers, and more than three times the next one.
It is a Spanish version of the same exam rather than a translator arrangement, and the way in is the translator request: candidates who ask for a translator for one of the ten are required to take the Spanish version, and since 2023 they take it without waiting for a translator to be approved.
The ten exams with a Spanish version
Exam
---
Law and Business
B, General Building
C-8, Concrete
C-9, Drywall
C-15, Flooring and Floor Covering
C-27, Landscaping
C-33, Painting and Decorating
C-36, Plumbing
C-39, Roofing
C-54, Ceramic and Mosaic Tile
The nine Spanish trade papers came to 4,718 candidates between them in 2025, against 6,853 for Spanish Law and Business. Their own volumes run from 1,869 for General Building down to 200 for Ceramic and Mosaic Tile.
Asking for a translator puts you into the Spanish version
CSLB’s rule here is short and easy to miss. If you ask for a translator for one of those ten exams, you are required to take the Spanish version instead. You do not get an English paper with somebody reading it to you.
For every other trade exam, and for every language other than Spanish, a translator is the route. CSLB may allow a translator of your choosing to read the examination to you, and that translator has to be approved in advance.
If you do need a translator
Approval is a paper process with a real wait, so start it early, not after you have booked the sitting. CSLB says its Examination Administration Unit reviews translator forms in the order they arrive and that this takes four to six weeks. Your application status page shows the progress as Screening Received, Screening Approved, Screening Denied or Screening Rejected, and a letter follows either way.
The rules in the room are strict. Read them before the day:
- The translator brings valid, unexpired, government-issued photo identification, the same list the candidate uses. A translator who is a minor may present a current-year school identification card with a photograph.
- No translation tools of any kind. If the translator cannot translate a word, they say it in English. They may not define or explain a term.
- The translator is bound by the same list of prohibited items as the candidate.
- PSI monitors every conversation between translator and candidate during the exam.
- A translator who prompts, coaches or assists in any way puts both people at risk of prosecution under Business and Professions Code sections 123 and 123.5, and the candidate’s application is denied under section 496. The candidate is then barred from any CSLB examination for one year from the test date.
- A translator who has translated once may not translate again for one year, so if you fail, you need a different translator for the retake.
Canceling with an approved translator goes through a different PSI line from an ordinary booking, and the same rule applies: PSI needs the cancellation two days before the appointment or you lose the fee.
What is the same either way
Everything else. Three and a half hours, on a computer at a PSI test center, multiple choice with four options and one best answer, closed book with a calculator provided, no penalty for guessing, and a result in your hand before you leave. Same seven sections, same published shares.
CSLB publishes a pass rate for the Spanish papers. Its 2025 Accomplishments and Activities Report puts Spanish Law and Business at 26 percent before the November 2024 toggle that shows the English text alongside the Spanish, and 28 percent after it. No English-only Law and Business rate is printed beside those, so the two cannot be set against each other.
Where this site stands
LBExam is in English for now. If we build a Spanish edition, we will build it the same way as the English one: from the public law, with the section behind most answers named. Until then, the free questions on this site are open to anyone, and the study guide CSLB publishes is free to download.
