About LBExam
Independent practice for the California Contractor Law and Business Exam, written from the law it is set on, with every answer naming the section it rests on.
Why it exists
Almost every practice test for this exam is a quiz with no sources behind it. A candidate who gets a question wrong is told the letter, not the rule, and has no way of checking whether the rule was ever right. That matters more here than it does on most exams, because the paper is closed book: what you cannot recall on the day you cannot look up.
So this site was built the other way round. The law comes first, the questions are written from it, and each answer carries the provision it stands on as a link into the text on this site. It is for anyone sitting the California Contractor Law and Business Exam, first time or retaking, in any classification, because it is the one paper every applicant sits.
How questions are written
Every source is a public document, fetched once, kept in this repository byte for byte, and turned into the text you read on the sources page. The Business and Professions Code, the Civil Code lien provisions, the Labor Code, the Financial Code, CSLB's own rules, the Cal/OSHA safety orders and the federal and state employer guides the study guide names. Nothing comes from a course book, a competitor's question bank, or a model's memory.
Each question goes through three passes and one gate. A planner reads the sources for one section and lists the testable facts. A drafter writes each question against a named provision and quotes the sentence it rests on. A verifier re-derives the answer from the source on its own, greps the quote against the corpus text, and drops anything that does not hold. Only then is a question promoted into the bank.
Most carry the provision they rest on, as a link into the law on this site. The others are written from a standard form or a published guide, which is not law and is not reproduced here, so they carry the explanation alone.
The sources page records when each source was last fetched and checked against its publisher.
Independence
LBExam is independent and not affiliated with the Contractors State License Board.
Contractors State License Board and CSLB name a California state agency. They appear here only to describe the exam.
LBExam has nothing to do with the Contractors State License Board. The board sets and marks the exam; this site helps you get ready for it.
Privacy
As little is stored as the site can work with: an email address, your answers, and whether you have paid. No card number ever reaches this site, and nothing here identifies you to CSLB. Details on the privacy page.
Corrections
A wrong question is a defect, not a difference of opinion, and it gets fixed rather than argued about. Every question inside an account has a report box, and anyone can write to [email protected].
